Weather
In Cañas, the rainy season (May to November) is characterized by hot, cloudy weather, while the dry season (December to April) brings very hot, windy, and partly cloudy conditions. Temperatures typically range from 24°C to 31°C, rarely falling below 23°C or exceeding 33°C.
Panama is a tropical country, so encountering bugs is inevitable, but it’s not as bad as you might expect. With the right precautions, you’ll be fine. Sand flies (locally known as chitras) can be bothersome on some beaches, especially during the rainy season, and are most active at dawn and dusk. To protect yourself, using insect repellent with 30-50% DEET and wearing long sleeves and pants will help minimize exposure.
Staff gratuities
Staff gratuities are not included in the price and are entirely at your discretion. We encourage you to tip what feels comfortable and fair for the general staff, wellness instructors, and spa therapists. In Panama, a guideline to consider is tipping between 10%, 15%, or 20% of your total bill.
DOCTORS & PHARMACY
Is there a hospital or doctor in the area?
For emergencies, the nearest health center is 20 minutes away in Tonosi. A doctor is also available for house calls in Playa Venao, just 8 km from Alaya. Additionally, there’s a pharmacy in Cañas, only 3 minutes away, and a 24-hour pharmacy located in Playa Venao.
WATER
Our water, sourced from on-site wells and filtered for purity, is safe to drink. Ice is available at the bar, and you’re welcome to bring your own water bottle or purchase an Alaya bottle from the restaurant or reception.
Every room is equipped with hot water for your comfort.
SAFETY
Cañas is a very safe and secure town, but we recommend storing your valuables in the room safe for added peace of mind. The property is gated, and owners live on-site with staff available 24/7 to assist in case of an emergency. You’re welcome to explore the town, where the locals are friendly and welcoming.
