Sustainability

At Alaya, we embrace the privilege of being nestled in one of nature’s most stunning corners with a deep sense of responsibility. Our mission is to protect the environment through a combination of sustainable practices that deepen respect for Mother Nature.

Permaculture

Our permaculture project at Alaya is a cornerstone of our commitment to sustainability. We have embarked on a journey to cultivate a diverse array of trees, fruits, vegetables, and herbs, with the aim of eventually sourcing all our menu ingredients from our own land. To date, we have planted more than 2000 (two thousand) trees, shrubs, and plants, contributing to the restoration of the local ecosystem. This effort has already attracted a vibrant community of wildlife, including a family of 13 wild howler monkeys and over 15 species of birds. We actively compost organic waste to support our permaculture project. By recycling food scraps and other biodegradable materials, we create nutrient-rich compost that enhances soil health and fertility. Through these initiatives, we strive to create a self-sustaining environment that nurtures both our guests and the natural world around us.

Biodigestor

We have integrated biodigestors into our project to treat and repurpose water efficiently. These systems process wastewater, allowing us to convert grey water into a valuable resource for irrigation.

Well

At Alaya, all our water is sourced from wells located on the property, which are meticulously filtered to ensure it is safe to drink. This approach not only provides high-quality water for our guests but also helps reduce our reliance on single-use plastic bottles.

Locally sourced goods

At Alaya, we are committed to sustainability through locally sourced goods. Our chicken and meat come from within a 15 km radius, supporting nearby producers and ensuring freshness. Eggs are sourced directly from our own property, while fruits and vegetables are either cultivated in our permaculture project or sourced from the highlands of Panama.

We provide biodegradable shampoo, conditioner, and soap made from coconut oil to all our guests. These eco-friendly products are sourced from Bocas del Toro, Panama, and are part of our commitment to sustainability. We encourage you to use our products, as we recycle water for irrigation throughout our land.

Our furniture is crafted from locally sourced wood by skilled Panamanian carpenters. This not only supports local artisans but also ensures that each piece is imbued with the unique character and beauty of the region.

Local talent

We proudly support local talent by employing a diverse team of Panamanians, many of whom hail from Cañas, Isla Cañas, and other regions of the country. We are committed to fostering long-term relationships with our staff, creating an environment that encourages both personal and professional growth. By working with our team members, we not only contribute to their development but also gain valuable insights and enrich our community through their unique perspectives and skills.

Solar goals

At Alaya, we are dedicated to advancing our sustainability efforts with a goal to transition to full solar energy by 2028. This commitment reflects our determination to reduce our carbon footprint and harness renewable energy sources. By investing in solar technology, we aim to power our retreat with clean, sustainable energy, furthering our mission to protect the environment and support a greener future.
